The ongoing controversy over the escalating costs of the North Shore wastewater treatment plant has taken a new turn. Seven city councillors from five different municipalities have written an open letter urging B.C.’s auditor general for an independent review of the project’s finances.
The group wants Auditor General Michael Pickup to investigate the reasons behind the budget overrun, which saw the facility’s estimated costs soar by $700 million to a ‘total of $3.86 billion just three months ago’. While inflation is one suggested factor, the councillors believe there are additional underlying issues.
Councillors Linda Annis and Mike Bose of Surrey, Daniel Fontaine and Paul Minhas of New Westminster, Kash Heed of Richmond, Ahmed Yousef of Maple Ridge, and Richard T. Lee of Burnaby argue that the project lacks transparency and accountability.
